Group Description
 

FORECOL, which integrates research work on Wildlife Management  and Fire Ecology and Management at CEABN-InBIO, is strongly linked with research lines from Biodiversity of Agricultural and Forest Ecosystems and Landscape Architecture and Ecology Research Groups. Research is conducted at different spatial scales ranging from local to landscape scales. Data generated will support directives for forest sustainable management especially addressing the effects of fire, grazing/browsing and other disturbances on the ecology and regeneration of forest ecosystems, aiming for its conservation, restoration and maintenance of ecosystem services.


FORECOL aims to understand the ecology and dynamics of forest ecosystems in order to contribute to their sustainable management. Particular focus is put on the effects of fire and grazing on the ecology, conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services of these ecosystems.

 

Research lines that have been pursued include:

 

1. Assessing the effects of fire on regeneration and dynamics of forest ecosystems. Response of forest ecosystems to fire has been investigated by the group in systems varying from Eucalyptus and Pine plantations to cork and holm oak woodlands.

 

2. Effects of fire and grazing interactions on ecosystem ecology. Recently, investigation within the group has focused on responses of different plant species, particularly trees, to the cumulative effects of fire and grazing. This may provide data for better management of fire prone ecosystems where grazing also occurs.

 

3. The effects of grazing and grazing exclusion on the ecology of cork and holm oak woodlands. Cork oak woodlands in particular are an important socio-economic and conservation valued system of the western Mediterranean Basin and Portugal. Adequate grazing management in these systems is crucial for assuring their conservation.

 

4. Effects of sustainable forest management on the conservation of biodiversity and services of forest ecosystems. This is a research line recently initiated by the group that will provide stakeholders with data supporting adequate management of forest ecosystems.
